This was a strange one. It all started after I installed Windows Vista Home Premium on a new computer. I had everything installed but was still getting a PCI Controller error in the Device Manager. I thought it had to do with the modem I had installed. It didn't.
Here is what happened: I spent the weekend trying to install Windows Vista on a DG965OT motherboard. I had a problem where the Device Manager reported a yellow exclamation point regarding a PCI Controller. It appears that the Intel® ME: Management Engine Interface Driver needed to be installed even though Windows said I did not need to install it. Once I inserted the driver disk, Vista searched for and loaded the driver for it. I contacted Intel and said that this should probably be listed under Known Issues on the DG965OT support site.
However, that issue was resolved but I could still not get the modem
installed. After more research, it turns out that there are only a few modems
that are verified to work with Vista. So I purchased one of those modems.
I installed it and then the computer would not even boot up. It would not
post to the BIOS or anything. Just hangs there. After realizing this
was a lost cause, I installed Windows XP Pro. The install went well.
Although when I was finished, the 1394 controller in the Device Manager had a
yellow bang next to it. Says that it has a problem. I tried
reinstalling the driver and that did not resolve the issue. At one point,
after installing the .inf files and everything, it said it was installing the
1394 controller. But the yellow bang mark is still there.
Of course I called Intel. That is one of the advantages of being an Intel
Partner. However, they were not able to assist me because their support system
has been down all day.
I went into the event viewer and it says the following:
OHCI1394 Boot-start or System-start driver(s) failed to load
I researched this on the web and it does not appear that anyone had been able to resolve the issue. Not that I can see. Although, one person who had this issue, also seems to have had an issue with their PCI card. That is a clue. I looked through the Release Notes for the Bios and found that in May 2007 Intel fixed a PCI card issue that related to Resource Allocation. It could very well be that either they still have an issue or that the fix may have broke something else.
I am to the point where I honestly think there is an issue with the motherboard. In the past I have encountered a new bad hard drive , new bad video card, but so far not a new bad motherboard; that I can remember anyway.
UPDATE: As it turns out, I was right about this and it was an issue with the Resource Allocation fix that they did back in May. The PCI problem has been fixed and is in the BIOS Version 1698 that is dated July 24, 2007
